How Does the Honda HR-V Compare to Leading Rivals?
Introduced back in 2016, the HR-V is one of Honda’s newest offerings and remains a top-seller in its segment. It combines good fuel economy with decent interior space and cargo capacity, as well as more features offered as standard equipment than most competitors can provide. How does it really compare to its leading rivals, though? In the comparison below, we’ll give you a brief rundown of how this compact SUV stands up to the likes of the Toyota C-HR and the Nissan Juke.
Honda HR-V Overview
For 2019, the HR-V gets a few minor updates, including a new front and rear design. It also gains two new trim levels – the Sport trim and the Touring trim. The Sport option offers tauter steering and handling with unique accents, while the Touring is designed to satisfy the needs of those who spend the most time on the road. The new infotainment system includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Honda has taken the step towards making most safety features standard equipment through the implementation of their Honda Sensing Suite on all trims. Buyers will find that the HR-V manages to deliver plenty of space for adults in the front but also in the rear, which is a rarity for this segment. It also includes smart cargo solutions that make it more usable than most of the rivals on the market. You’ll also find that the EX trims and above for HR-V come standard with some interesting features that are only available as costly upgrades with other automakers, including standard heated front seats, keyless entry, and a central touchscreen for the infotainment system.
Honda HR-V vs. Toyota C-HR
The Toyota C-HR is remarkably similar to the HR-V in many ways, including the overall size and form factor. However, it differs considerably from Honda’s offering. For 2019, the C-HR sees no exterior updates but does gain Apple CarPlay (but not Android Auto). Two new trim levels were also introduced – the LE and Limited trims. There are some downsides to the C-HR, though. For instance, acceleration is best described as “lethargic” due to the underpowered 4-cylinder engine. The C-HR also suffers from significant cabin noise while driving, and the cargo space is remarkably limited. Most experts recommend upgrading to at least the mid-tier XLE trim in order to get a decent mix of convenience features and driver assist technology that compares to lower trims of the HR-V. The interior is not particularly high-quality, although it is functional, and the comfort level is minimal but serviceable for shorter jaunts. Note that there is only a single engine and transmission option available across all trim levels – a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a CVT. Some of the standard features include LED running lights, 17-inch wheels, and dual-zone automatic climate controls. However, for remote entry, satellite radio, an integrated navigation system, and most other higher-end features, upgrading to the XLE trim is necessary. The Honda HR-V is the better choice for drivers looking for better value, more interior flexibility, more efficiency, and exciting styling in their compact SUV.
Honda HR-V vs. Nissan Juke
Fun and funky, the Nissan Juke has been around since 2011. Love it or hate it, it is a contender with the HR-V, although it is certainly not on a level playing field. For one thing, the Juke ended production in 2017, so there are no new models. That immediately puts the diminutive crossover SUV at a disadvantage. Second, there’s the exterior styling, which is polarizing, to say the least. Some people love it, while others loathe it. It does offer all-wheel drive as an option, but since your only choice is to buy used, that may not be available in your market. Overall, the Juke delivers lively handling and better acceleration than the Toyota C-HR thanks to a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The suspension is also rated well. Despite these benefits, the Juke falls short in many areas. For instance, while it offers 17-inch wheels and some decent features, you have to move up from the base model to access things like a sunroof, automatic climate control, an improved audio system, or Nissan’s I-Con system to change driving modes. Other niceties, like a navigation system, are only available with specific packages (the Technology package brings nav capabilities). To really have a comparable driving experience, you would have to upgrade to the highest trim level. And, again, since the Juke is no longer in production, you would have to purchase a used version that cannot keep up with the advancements of the new Honda HR-V models.

The choice is ultimately clear – the HR-V offers a unique blend of features and capabilities that make it a fun yet capable ride. Whether you’re looking for a fuel-efficient replacement for your aging daily driver or something for your college-aged child, the HR-V could be exactly what you are searching for.
