Using the Traffic Sign Recognition Feature

New cars are being made with what’s known as the traffic sign recognition feature. This feature automatically detects all kinds of traffic signs on the road, so the driver doesn’t have to worry about searching for signs while they’re trying to stay safe behind the wheel. The sensor is pre-installed in the car and will alert the driver every time a sign passes by on the road, including safety signs, speed limit signs, and construction signs that indicate when the driver needs to adjust their driving.

How the Traffic Sign Recognition Feature Works

The traffic sign recognition feature is synced up with a digital map that lists all the registered traffic signs on the road. These signs are meant to alert the driver of information that will affect their driving habits, usually by telling the driver to slow down or that’s okay to speed up. Drivers have a lot to pay attention to when driving, including what’s happening in front, to the side, and behind their car, their GPS and whomever may be in the car with them. The traffic sign recognition feature was created to help ease the burden on drivers. It sends an automatic alert telling the driver what they need to know, in case they miss one of the signs on the road. Not Relying Solely on the Traffic Sign Recognition Feature

Drivers should still be on the lookout for traffic signs when driving. New updates are being made to the traffic sign recognition feature, so the system may not have a record of every single traffic sign the driver might encounter. As neighborhoods and towns add signs to the road, some changes may not be recorded in the system. If a driver gets used to not having to look for traffic signs, they might miss an important sign that hasn’t made it into the system yet. This is especially true of large urban areas with lots of traffic incidents. If an accident takes place on the road, drivers will need to react immediately instead of depending on the traffic sign recognition feature.
